Online Learning

As an online program, the Master of Supply Chain Transportation & Logistics is well suited to working professionals and those who live outside the Seattle area. Most classes, readings, assignments and discussions are accessed online, meaning you have the flexibility to earn a UW degree from anywhere in the world that has high-speed internet access.

The program includes a mandatory 3-day Residency (SCTL 501). This in-person class is held in Seattle in September, typically the week before autumn quarter begins. Students can also participate in the residency course online.

How Online Learning Works

From your computer, you will connect to a robust online learning management system called Canvas. This web-based software allows you to access course materials on demand and interact with faculty and fellow classmates in online forums at any time.

As in a classroom course, you will start and finish each online course with the rest of your cohort. All students have the same deadlines, and you will need to keep up with all lectures, readings and other assignments.

For each five-credit course, you can expect about five hours of online instruction each week. This program uses both real-time online instruction and on-demand learning.

Real-Time Online Instruction

Live, real-time online classes are a central aspect of the program and one of its unique strengths. Held one night a week from 5–7 p.m. Pacific time, the classes bring instructors and students together using the web conferencing platform.

These sessions give you the opportunity to participate in discussions, exercises, games, simulations and other activities with members of your cohort. The interactions are a key element to building the relationships that differentiate the program from other online degree programs. Regular attendance is required to successfully complete the program.

On-Demand Online Instruction

The other three hours of weekly instruction typically consist of recorded lectures and self-study modules that can be reviewed at your convenience. The instructor narrates the presentation of a specific course topic, providing additional explanations and examples. A five-credit course also requires about 10 hours of study outside of class each week.
